regions of Portugal
Portugal is a land of contrasting landscapes. In the northwest, the strikingly green Minho region vibrates with the energy of local festivals and markets. Further east, the Trás-os-Montes is dotted with ancient villages linked by well-trodden farm tracks.
Travel south for about 150km and you'll reach Portugal's highest and most dramatic mountain range, the Serra da Estrela, which provides the country's most challenging hikes amidst bare plateaus that slide away into lush valleys.
Elsewhere in Portugal, the scenery may be less grand, but the walking is always a pleasure, whether you're ambling around the Alentejo looking at megalithic ruins or wandering next to the Douro river along an abandoned railway line.
