Pili Pala Press donates money to Prestige clean-up
Pili Pala Press has just donated more than €200 to SEO/BirdLife, a Spanish organization heavily involved in oil clean-up operations following the Prestige oil disaster. The money represents 4% of the cover price of every Pili Pala Press book sold in 2002. Each year, Pili Pala Press donates money to environmental causes in Spain and Portugal. Sales in 2000 and 2001 went to help efforts to protect the endangered Iberian Lynx.
Oil slick: the aftermath
The total number of oiled birds recovered from beaches in Spain, France and Portugal between 16th November 2002 and 16th January 2003 was 13,221 (3,873 live and 9,348 dead) belonging to 62 species.
SEO/BirdLife predicts that the Guillemot will probably be lost as a breeding bird in Spain as a result of the spill.
Season's Greetings!
The World Wildlife Fund is urging merrymakers to help save the Iberian Lynx and insist that their wine and champagne is stopped with real cork. Spain and Portugal's cork oak forests are the last remaining habitat on earth of the endangered Lynx, and are being gradually wiped out as some wine manufacturers switch to synthetic cork.
Oil slick
More than 80 kilometres of the Galician coastline, in northwest Spain, have been polluted by oil from the tanker Prestige, which sunk off the coast of Spain in mid-November. For more details, to donate money or to volunteer, see the World Wildlife Fund web site at www.panda.org/news_facts/crisis/spain_oil_spill/index.cfm.
SOS Lynx
The Iberian Lynx is the most endangered wild cat in the world, with only 200 animals left in Spain and Portugal. Pili Pala Press donated 50p from the sales of Walking in Portugal in 2001 to this important cause. Visit www.soslynx.org for more information on how you can help save these beautiful animals from extinction.
WWF Lynx campaign
Pili Pala Press donates 50p from each book sold to environmental organizations. In 2000, this money went to the World Wildlife Fund's Campaign for Europe's Carnivores.
